Wintercircus

Before the second world war, indoor circus' were very popular. In Ghent the built the original wintercircus in 1894 buit it burnt down in 1920 and got rebuilded in concrete in 1923. Last performance was 28 may 1944, and then it stood empty for the first time. After that, an Renault garage - Mahy - was housed here, so they added ramps for the cars to drive to the higher floors.

The city of Ghent then wanted it empty again, to demolish it and build a cinema and other cultural buildings there. For some reason that never happend, so this building still is standing in downtown Ghent. Last year they even repaired the roof to prevent further decay.

I wanted to visit this building ever since I first knew about it, but it's sealed. A few weeks ago somebody made an entrance so I was lucky to visit it, it's now sealed again with some big iron welded plates...

This brewery closed in 1989 and was known for its heavy beers Geuze and Lambiek.

Wintercircus in 360° howto

One of the lenses in my collection is a 8 mm Peleng fisheye. The fisheye effect can be very nice when used with some caution, but one can use this little heavy russian gem also for 360 degrees panoramas.
